MedPAC: 64% of Hospitals Lose Money on Medicare Patients
In August, I described hospital monopolies as “the most predatory force in our health-care system.” But perhaps I was being too hard on hospitals, because the biggest driver of hospitals’ predatory behavior is an even larger predator: the federal government. (Source: Forbes.com Healthcare News)

Dear 16-Year-Old Me

Dear 16-Year-Old Me
I learned about this education video via @SeattleMamaDoc.    Sun safe practices: Staying in the shade, especially between the sun’s peak hours (10 a.m. - 4 p.m.). Covering up with clothing, a brimmed hat and UV-blocking sunglasses. Avoiding tanning and UV tanning booths. Use sunscreen, SPF 15 or above, preferably one with a sunblock component also.  To protect against the UVA rays, the product needs to have avobenzone (Parsol 1789), ecamsule (Mexoryl), titanium dioxide, or micro-zinc oxide. Sunscreens should not be used in babies under 6 months old.  It is recommended by the American Academy of Pediatrics for this group to use other sun safe practices such as the ones just mentioned.     Related blog posts: Sun Protection (March 19, 2009) Mela...

Museum Exhibit: Violence, Women, and Art
I stumbled upon the news of this exhibit when I visited the CDC’s website and clicked on the button  “CDC Museum.”    Did you know the CDC had a museum?  Well, I don’t think I was aware of it. Local tolerance of intraarticular administration of lornoxicam into the rabbit knee joint
Abstract  The local tolerability of lornoxicam (Xefo®) after single and repeated intraarticular administration was assessed in the rabbit and compared to established standard therapies (hyaluronic acid—Synvisc® and the glucocorticoid triamcinolone—Triam®), and the results are discussed in the context of the literature. Two local tolerance studies were performed using five male rabbits per group. Lornoxicam and competitor products were administered into the right knee joint in a volume of 500 Î¼L. The contralateral left knee joint of the same animal was used as the control and was injected with water for injection. Three out of five animals were killed 72 h after the last administration, whereas the remaining two animals were subjected to a 2- or 6-week recov...

Effects of Glucosamine and Chondroitin Sulfate on Cartilage Metabolism in OA: Outlook on Other Nutrient Partners Especially Omega-3 Fatty Acids
Osteoarthritis (OA) is a degenerative joint disease that is characterized by increasing loss of cartilage, remodeling of the periarticular bone, and inflammation of the synovial membrane. Besides the common OA therapy with nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), the treatment with chondroprotectives, such as glucosamine sulfate, chondroitin sulfate, hyaluronic acid, collagen hydrolysate, or nutrients, such as antioxidants and omega-3 fatty acids is a promising therapeutic approach. Numerous clinical studies have demonstrated that the targeted administration of selected micronutrients leads to a more effective reduction of OA symptoms, with less adverse events. Their chondroprotective action can be explained by a dual mechanism: (1) as basic components of cartilage and synovial fluid...

The role of breast imaging in macrolane injection—A review and report of three cases
We present three cases referred to our centre in the last 2 years with complications associated with Macrolaneâ„¢ injection, possibly from injection into an incorrect tissue plane. Complications included breast pain, haematoma, cellulitis and abscess formation. We suggest that such aesthetic procedures should be carried out under ultrasound guidance to ensure administration into the correct site, potentially avoiding such complications.
